Fun fact- India has never tried to invade another country. But many countries have invaded it over the years. Because of so much invasion, some foreign delicacies came and settled here and became our favourites! Brace for impact, this one’s going to be a real shocker by the end.

Jalebi

It’s probably the most Indian a dish could get, right? Wrong. Our favourite Indian sweet actually originated in the Middle East. it was originally called zalabiya (Arabic) or zalibiya (Persian).

Vindaloo

This doesn’t come as that big of a surprise. I mean, it’s a Goan dish and we know that Goa was colonised by the Portuguese for the longest time. In fact, the term vindaloo comes from the Portuguese phrase ‘carne de vinha d’alhos’, meaning a Portuguese meat dish of pork marinated in wine and garlic.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CYO_y3VIjEd/

Filter Coffee

Yes, take your time. Heal from the shock. South India’s favourite filter “kaaphi” actually originated in Yemen. It was discovered by Sufi saint Baba Budan on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Filter coffee, as humble and simple as it is, has really fancy origins!

https://www.instagram.com/p/CW2Tv0rBLzX/

Chicken Tikka Masala

I’m here to blow your mind. Twice. Firstly this gift from God isn’t a Punjabi dish (what!). Secondly, it’s from Glasgow, Scotland (WHAT IN THE WORLD). I have nothing more to say, I’m in genuine shock right now.

Biryani

A nationwide favourite. Not from this nation! Biryani has its origins in Persia, not India! Interestingly enough, the word biryani originates from the word “birian”, meaning fried before cooking.

Told you it’s a shocker, didn’t I?
